What’s Trending for Interiors
Colors and Shapes for the Spring and Summer Season
By Barbara Schmidt
So we’ve turned the corner into a year and come out of hibernation. Soon we can shop again and explore all our favorite showrooms. What’s hot and what’s not? Overall, it appears that we are moving into a new color scheme, and we are trying to warm up our stark interiors with patterns as well.
There’s no time like the present to scan your favorite sites and publications to find what resonates with your own design aesthetic. Watch for tweaks to the neutral standards.
As one local influencer mentioned to me on her way out the door after purchasing one of my antique tables - “a lot of the local influencers look the same.” By that she meant the photography looks overlit featuring black and white or neutral color schemes with touches of blue and gold.
If that’s you, then you are right on trend. But if it’s not you don’t despair - change is underfoot. Change is good and it’s really the only trend we can count on for sure. Here are some of the changes we are seeing for the months to come:
White Churns to Cream
That’s right - we are seeing a big push for cream colored interiors. All of sudden white sees uninspired and not as sophisticated as a warmer cream tone. And just as we had finished updating all our interiors to cool tones - we will need to start adding softer tones.
Also see a resurgence of tan again. It comes from the desert color trends from dusty pink to deep, saturated rust tones. We just designed an entire set with a tan that has some of those desert tones and it’s really a modern beauty.
Terrific Terrazzo
It’s a classic. And it’s back in a big way. Terrazzo is retro and new all at the same time. It was the floor of choice in the mid 1900’s for commercial properties. It found itself brought into upscale residential properties in the 1950s. Many mid century modern homes feature Terrazzo floors.
It’s back and we are designing countertops, walls and floors with Terrazzo again. Watch for major product releases this year with new colors and new patterns.
Toot that Flute
Fluted columns were popular at the turn of the last century and now we see fluting on vent hoods, islands, wall panels, cabinetry, etc. I just designed a kitchen island with fluting. I just featured a fluted cement table in a kitchen. A designer out in Charleston just built custom cabinets with fluted panels. Flutes are everywhere and will continue to appear on accessories and furniture as the year progresses.
The Golden Arches
No, I don’t mean McDonald’s or St. Louis, but I do mean tall arched doorways and windows. The popular arch I’m writing about is taller and more like a gravestone arch not like a soft, wide eyebrow arch of the 80s and 90s.
These taller thin arches will be designed into cabinetry, furniture, and architecture motifs as well as artwork for the years to come. It makes sense, we tired of everything square so arches felt new again.
Cabinetry Simplified
Who knew ten years ago that kitchens would modernize to the point of simplicity? Nearly all the kitchens we are designing now are full overlay door styles - meaning they cover the cabinetry box framing completely. And the doors are either simplified Shaker style or slab style.
What that means is that laminate cabinetry is the rage right now due to look, style and cost effectiveness. Not all laminate cabinetry is created equally. Check out box construction and use of edge banding vs. miter folding to know the difference in cost effectiveness and quality.
Watch for warping and color consistency in laminate cabinetry as well. Make sure to qualify your fabricator to ensure correct fabrication and installation for your particular project. There are wood laminates, metal laminates, matte and glossy laminates to meet just about every need in a project.
